Nothing was taken lightly,” Freudenberger says. “It was really about taking every single element, examining it, and making a thoughtful and directed design decision. To make them, Freudenberger sourced vintage textiles from shops up and down the coast, then laid out the patterns and had them hand-stitched together in Los Angeles.
One corner is primed for gazing out the window with its daybeds covered in sea-blue patchwork cushions. Driving up from her home in Los Angeles-the hotel is about three-and-a-half hours from both L.A. “It feels wild and exciting,” Freudenberger says. Instead of palm trees, Cambria is famous for its emerald-needled Monterey pines, a tree whose native forests are so rare-there are only five in the world-it once had a nonprofit dedicated to its protection. She wanted White Water to have a “Danish seaside” feel, and to reflect the textures that set Cambria apart from its beach brethren further south. Located just off Cambria’s Moonstone Beach (the place names alone have a transportative effect), the 25-room property’s creative direction has been defined by Nina Freudenberger, an interior designer known for her private home work and curation of effortlessly cool spaces in the books Surf Shack and Bibliostyle. Design enthusiasts will find such a gem-within-driving-distance in White Water, a newly opened hotel from PRG Hospitality Group on California’s Central Coast.
